How the URL Shortener compares

A self-hosted, framework-free shortener next to well-known alternatives — SaaS classics and open-source projects — across the features that matter when a short-link layer sits in front of campaigns, documentation and internal tools. Its strength is hosting sovereignty with a complete free core, not a feature count.

✓ available ~ with limits (paid tier, plugin or reduced scope) – not available

Feature availability reflects the general picture as of 2026. SaaS capabilities often depend on the paid tier; self-hosted capabilities may depend on plugins or version. Everything in the URL Shortener column is open source under EUPL 1.2 except the three rows marked †, which are delivered by the optional Enterprise plug-in layer.

Reading the URL Shortener column.

  • Analytics record the device (user agent), referrer and language of each redirect, plus automated bot detection, against a hashed IP. There is no geo-IP lookup, so the geo row is marked partial rather than full.
  • Domains. A deployment serves one domain today; serving several domains from a single instance is not yet supported.
  • Not yet shipped. QR-code generation and per-link password protection are not part of the current release.
  • MCP. The shortener exposes a Model Context Protocol server, so links, campaigns, tags and statistics can be driven directly from AI and agent workflows — a capability it shares, in this comparison, only with Dub.
  • † Enterprise rows. Campaigns, tags and the MCP server are part of the commercial plug-in layer. The plug-ins install as jars on the classpath and degrade gracefully without a licence; everything else in the column is open source under EUPL 1.2. See Open core.
  • Tier-dependent SaaS features. Several SaaS entries above (aliases, bulk operations, analytics, export, API access) sit behind a paid plan, and those free/paid boundaries change regularly.

The point is not to win every row. It is to keep a complete short-link layer in your own environment, under a free licence, with campaigns, tags and an AI-ready MCP server available when you need them. Full documentation and the live project: url.svenruppert.com · source on GitHub.
